The Movie: Son of God
 글쓴이 : 관리자

This year, America has been pouring forth many movies on the Bible. So far released are Son of God, a story about Jesus; God’s Not Dead, an independent film; and Noah, a Hol-lywood movie; and Exodus will be released at the end of this year. Movie experts call it the “golden days of biblical movies.” Perhaps, the last contents of the world will eventually be the Bible. These movies are worth watching if you are a Christian.
Son of God was produced based on the ten episodes of a mini-series, The Bible, which handled the overall story of the Bible in 2013. Because it reflects on the Bible as a com-parison, it can also be called a mockumentary (A dramatic movie that features the form of a documentary but proceeds with acting).
In comparison to Mel Gibson’s Passion of the Christ (2004) which focused on the suf-fering of Jesus, Son of God showed the life story and humanity of Jesus. Its focus seems chaotic and scenes a bit disruptive.

Since this production was Director Christopher Spencer’s first, not only did he have great passion, he must have wanted to reflect the demands of the people who wanted the story ex-actly according to the Bible. As a result, not only was it difficult for non-Christians to watch the movie, but it also lacked the dramatic elements and the movie did not obtain popularity in Korea. However, the movie attained $59 million in one month in America. The movie has received as many criticisms as the concerns it has drawn.  The first criticism was that the actor Diogo Morgado was too handsome compared to the people’s conception of Jesus.
However, the biggest mistake was its message that Jesus’ goal in His ministry was to change the world. Jesus came to this earth in order to save us from our sins, which was more unat-tractive and difficult than changing the entire world. If Jesus had come as handsome as the actor in the movie and cried, “Let’s change the world!”, then people might have followed Him until the end. Although mankind would not have attained to the way of salvation …!

Whether it be two thousand years ago or now, people always have the romantic hope of changing the world. An important truth is that the world is constantly changing but it remains unchanged because “I” am unchanged. Even a person who changes the world dies before being able to change himself.
Hollywood’s production of biblical movies is not because it has received grace. Its motive comes from demand and profitability. Yet, it reflects that the story the world is ultimately searching for is the Bible. This just jolted us into a realization. We are living in a world where the words “healing” and “self-development” are prevalent. Now, just like Jesus’ original message, people wish to change themselves. In order to achieve this, they come to the Bible.
Jesus seems attractive in the movie; but Jesus doesn’t have to look attractive because He was truly so in real life. Though the world may change countless times, Jesus is the only one to whom every weary soul can return?just as everyone’s eyes will well up with tears at the scene of Jesus’ crucifixion regardless of their views on the movie.
