The Grace-Filled Genesis Genealogy Seminars in Hong Kong and Malaysia (May 2011)

In November 2010, the mighty wind of the redemptive series that shook Indonesia and Singapore spread to India and Malaysia within three months. Jesus Christ’s ultimate command to “spread the Word to the ends of the earth” is now changing, with certainty, to “soon, it will be done”; and the motto “The Globalization of Prayer, Faith, and Vision!” is now within full reach. Let us take a look at the astounding redemptive work that has unfolded within these foreign lands.

The Genesis Genealogies Seminar in Hong Kong
Tuesday, April 5, 2011
The seminar in Hong Kong was possible because of the efforts put forth by President Budiyono Gatut of SATI Theological Seminary in Malang, Indonesia. After attending the History of Redemption Series seminar in Korea (October 2010), Dr. Gatut has been doing his best to publicize the Series throughout Southeast Asia. The seminar took place at International Christian Assembly Church. Built like a theater, the main worship hall is equipped to hold 1,200 people. The building holds 10 different congregations and has worship services in 10 different languages including English and Chinese. In this international church, the pastor in charge of the Indonesian congregation is a former student of Dr. Gatut. Even though the seminar was held during the week on a Tuesday, it was a success with the attendance of over 500 people. The lectures were conducted in 3 languages - English, Indonesian and Chinese.

Most of the attendees were from Indonesia who live away from their families to work in Hong Kong as housekeepers. These women had to request a day off from their employers in order to attend. Though the seminar took place twice in the morning from 10 a.m. to noon and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the afternoon the atmosphere remained ablaze throughout. The participants agreed that they felt a strong thirst for the Word.
During the morning seminar, a few Muslims and homosexuals attended. Even though Dr. Philip Lee spoke plainly by preaching, “Homosexuality runs counter to the Bible,” they still attended the afternoon session. One President Gatut explaining about the Indonesian Muslim even confessed of being converted to Christianity at the seminar.

After the seminar, Book 1 of the History of Redemption series (The Genesis Genealogies) sold over 500 copies. There were especially many attendees who came to purchase Book 2, The Covenant of the Torch. These people said that they would evangelize the families for whom they work. Most of their employers are high-ranking officials and upper class members of society. We eagerly anticipate that these Indonesian women living in Hong Kong will be the source of great missionary work of that area.

Though the seminar ended at 4 p.m., none of the attendees jumped up out their seats. Instead, they joyfully spent time afterwards with the pastors from Korea by greeting, speaking, taking pictures with them and having their recently purchased books from the History of Redemption series signed. Even two hours later, they were reluctant to leave as the Hong Kong seminar drew to a close at 6 p.m.

The Genesis Genealogies Seminar in Kuching, Malaysia
Thursday, April 7, 2011
The seminar in Kuching is the second seminar conducted in Malaysia, following the one held in Kuala Lumpur this past February 19-20. Held at the Good News Fellowship Church, this seminar ran for two hours from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. with over 50 attendees.
Good News Fellowship Church, which seats 500 people, is a big church that continuously sends out missionaries to several indigenous populations who live within the deep forests of Borneo Island. The sponsoring pastor of the seminar notified many of the Christian pastors in the Kuching area as well as the missionaries dispatched to the various locations of this event. It was amazing that many of the contacted Christian leaders already knew about the History of Redemption series, and many pastors had already read the books themselves. This even shocked the coordinators of the seminar. A good number of attendees even brought their previously purchased books with them. Professor Thomas, a Greek professor at a seminary in Kuching, had even studied the English versions of Books 1 through 3 and used these books as part of his curriculum. Professor Thomas actively participated in the seminar and after it ended, held on to the lecturers from Korea by continuously asking them many questions.
The attending pastors were astonished by the facts revealed to the world for the first time through the History of Redemption series. They were amazed that Adam and Lamech, Noah’s father, lived contemporaneously for 56 years and that Noah and Abraham lived contemporaneously for 58 years. They were also astonished to find out the fact that the time it took for Noah to build the ark was not 120 years, but rather 70-80 years. One pastor said, “I thought that once Adam was kicked out of the Garden of Eden, that was it. However, I was amazed that he had repented, lived down to his 9th generation, Lamech, and passed on his faith to his descendants by teaching them.” Two Chinese pastors were impressed when they heard, “First, pastors need to repent,” and said, “From the time the seminar began, we were awakened and refreshed by the Word which we heard for the first time.”

The Strength and Grace of the Overseas Seminars
Rev. Andrew Pak who attended the series of overseas seminars said, “A common characteristic of the congregation who attended the overseas seminar was that they had a positive reaction to the message preached from the History of Redemption series. Like people who have been hungry and thirsty for a long time, they were grateful to receive the Word, the spiritual food. They were delighted.” Compared to the congregation in Korea who are calm when receiving the Word, the overseas seminar attendees seemed greatly shocked and deeply moved with their alert and focused eyes as they received the Word.
The area where the seminar took place is one in which a certain religion, other than Christianity, holds control over that society. In Southeast Asia, the laws are restrictive so that only a house that was owned by a Muslim can be sold to another Muslim. For that reason, there are many cases in which people convert to Islam; and conversely, Christian converts end up facing more difficulties. Regardless, even under those difficult circumstances, the bright countenances of the seminar attendees did not fade. Rather, when the lecturers witnessed that, and saw the attendees receiving the redemptive historical Word with great joy, they themselves received strength and grace as a result.
In the case of overseas seminars, translation carries a specific importance. Even when a translator has done his or her best, only about 60-70% of the message has been conveyed. Still, even though there were moments in which the redemptive historical Word that could not all be translated, through grace, they were able to receive the same blessing as if it had been all translated. Truly, those were moments in which we could observe the reality of Hebrews 4:12, “For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”
